In the late 19th century, many people misunderstood Charles Darwin’s work, thinking that humans directly descended from modern apes. They believed that to accept this idea, we needed to find a fossil of an “ape-man” to fill the gap. This so-called “missing link” was thought to be the evolutionary bridge between humans and apes.
The Truth About Evolution
After spending millions of dollars and countless hours searching, scientists and enthusiasts have discovered that humans didn’t evolve from any existing ape species. Instead, millions of years ago, humans and other primates shared a common ancestor. There was never a single species that directly linked humans to today’s apes.
Evolution in Popular Culture
The way human evolution is often depicted in popular culture wrongly suggests that evolution is a straight line of progress. This isn’t true. For Homo sapiens to evolve from apes, the ancestors of Homo sapiens must have been an ape species, but that doesn’t mean Homo sapiens stopped being apes. In fact, Homo sapiens are one of the four types of great apes alive today.
The Great Apes
The great apes include humans, orangutans, gorillas, and chimpanzees. They are named for their large bodies and larger brains compared to other primates. Great apes are active during the day and rest at night. When we exclude humans from the category of apes in everyday conversation, it’s more a social distinction than a scientific one.
The Arrogance of Evolutionary Thinking
Believing that apes aim to evolve into humans shows human arrogance. It’s not the dream of every species to become human. Humans are remarkable as humans, just as chimps are remarkable as chimps, and bonobos as bonobos. Each species has unique strengths that others don’t. For instance, many apes are much stronger than humans, excellent tree climbers, and have far superior short-term memory.
Our Common Ancestors
All ape species, including Homo sapiens, are descendants of a common ancestor that lived millions of years ago. This ancestor doesn’t exist anymore because it evolved into the various species we see today: humans, chimps, bonobos, orangutans, and others. This common ancestor would probably look more like a non-human ape to us, which makes sense. If you add thick fur to a human, they might resemble an ape, and removing fur from an ape might make them look more like us.
The Takeaway
Understanding our evolution is crucial to appreciating our place in the natural world. Humans are just one branch of the diverse tree of life, sharing common roots with the great apes. This perspective helps us respect and value the unique traits and abilities of all species, including our own.

“It is just that millions of years ago humans and primates were the same species. There has never been a species that linked humans to existing ape species”
Where is your evidence for this? As far as we know, the only thing that we know, is there are humans and there are apes. This is not an assumption. It is fact. The concept that apes and human were from the animal in the past is purely speculative.
It is not based upon what has been observed as it occurred in real time. It is based upon even more assumptions, because someone had the idea that there used to be a “common” ancestor.
Show just one known animal that has been observed which was not classified as the same kind of life form as its parents and the ancestors of its parents.
You can’t. There is none. But you treat it as though it is fact. You spread it around infecting unsuspecting and unknowing minds and don’t tell them it is only a speculation that is not supported with scientific facts.
