If Evolution Is True…

Despite overwhelming evidence, many doubt evolution. This article addresses common skeptic questions and explains why evolution is a scientific fact, not a matter of opinion. It highlights the practical applications of evolutionary theory in medicine, agriculture, and beyond.

It would be an understatement to say the evidence for evolution is overwhelming, yet a substantial proportion of people in Western countries, especially the US, doubt its reality. Evolution skeptics often base their doubts on the notion that Darwin’s theory of evolution is, after all, “only a theory,” and that creationism—including its sister concept, “intelligent design”—represents a plausible scientific alternative to evolution.

Common Questions from Evolution Skeptics

In debates with science skeptics, it is not uncommon to hear demands for explanations of certain phenomena that evolutionary theory covers. These questions are often posed to undermine the theory:

  • If evolution is true, why are there still monkeys?
  • If evolution is true, why don’t species have half-formed traits?
  • If evolution is true, why aren’t we currently evolving?

Ironically, what evolution skeptics want others to doubt is one of the best-supported theories in science.

Evolution is Not a Matter of Opinion

When conversing with your neighbor or dining with friends, the question “Do you believe in evolution?” may arise, as if it were a philosophical matter, akin to:

  • Do you think angels and demons exist?
  • What is your opinion on karma?
  • Is there only one deity?
  • Do you believe in evolution?

However, unlike angels, demons, karma, or deities, the existence of evolution is not a matter of opinion but a scientific fact. Evolution is observable, with a theory that explains how it happens and how speciation works.

Real-World Applications of Evolutionary Theory

Furthermore, evolutionary theory has practical applications in the real world:

  • Organismal Biology and Ecology: These fields rely on evolutionary theory to understand the relationships and behaviors of living organisms.
  • Medicine: Many vaccines and all antibiotics are developed thanks to evolutionary theory.
  • Domestication: The domestication of animals and plants serves as living evidence of how speciation works under human influence.

In Summary

Evolutionary theory is an established scientific theory, whether one likes it or not.

In Another World

Discussions on the reality of evolutionary theory are fundamentally futile because falsification of the theory does not mean verification of creationism. If, in another universe, the current evolutionary theory were to be falsified, evolution would remain a fact—just as falsification of the theory of gravity would not make gravity disappear. Theories change over time, but facts prevail.
